Product Description

Originally developed by Netscape in 1999, RSS (which can stand for RDF Site Summary, Rich Site Summary, or Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format that allows web developers to describe and syndicate web site content. Content Syndication with RSS offers webloggers, developers, and the programmers who support them a thorough explanation of syndication in general and RSS in particular. Written for web developers who want to offer XML-based feeds of their content, as well as developers who want to use the content that other people are syndicating, the book explores and explains metadata interpretation, different forms of content syndication, and the increasing use of web services in this field. Topics covered in the book include:

Creating XML syndication feeds with RSS 0.9x and 2.0

Beyond headlines: creating richer feeds with RSS 1.0 and RDF metadata

Using feeds to enrich a site or find information

Publish and subscribe: intelligent updating

News aggregators, such as Meerkat, Syndic8, and Newsisfree, and their web services

Alternative industry-centric standards

If you’re interested in producing your own RSS feed, this step-by-step guide to implementation is the book you’ll want in hand.

Product Description

Written for enterprise Java developers who have become disillusioned with the complexity and bulk involved with EJB development, this programming tool demonstrates how the Spring framework can make coupled code easy to manage, understand, reuse, and unit-test. Spring’s employment of inversion control and aspect-oriented programming techniques to encourage loosely coupled code is explained, providing programmers with the ability to use JavaBeans with the power and enterprise services only previously available in the heavier Enterprise JavaBeans.

About the Author

Product Description

The Google Web Toolkit is a new technology that automatically translates Java into JavaScript, making Ajax applications easier to code and deploy. GWT in Action is a comprehensive tutorial for Java developers interested in building the next generation of rich, web-based applications. This book was written by Robert Hanson, creator of the popular GWT Widget Library and Adam Tacy a major contributor to the GWT Widget Library.

There is a new emphasis on building rich, web-based applications. These applications can be difficult to build because they rely on JavaScript, which lacks the sophisticated object-oriented structures and static typing of Java, they are tricky to debug, and they require you to manage numerous browser inconsistencies.

In May of 2006 Google released the Google Web Toolkit (GWT). GWT enables developers to create Ajax applications in Java. With GWT, you can build your applications using a real object-oriented language and take advantage of Java tools like Eclipse that are already available. Instead of trying to bring tool support to Ajax, Google brought Ajax to a place where the tools already existed.

GWT in Action shows you how to take advantage of these exciting new tools. Readers will follow an example running throughout the book and quickly master the basics of GWT: widgets, panels, and event handling. The book covers the full development cycle, from setting up your development environment, to building the application, then deploying it to the web server. The entire core GWT library is discussed, with details and examples on how it can be extended.

GWT helps you make the most of Ajax in your web applications and GWT in Action helps you get more out of GWT. Readers can download Early Access Chapters of GWT in Action now and participate in the Author Forum by visiting at the Manning site.

Product Description

A good web development framework anticipates what you need to do and makes those tasks easier and more efficient; jQuery practically reads your mind. Developers of every stripe-hobbyists and professionals alike-fall in love with jQuery the minute they’ve reduced 20 lines of clunky JavaScript into three lines of elegant, readable code. This new, concise JavaScript library radically simplifies how you traverse HTML documents, handle events, perform animations, and add Ajax interactions to your web pages.

jQuery in Action, like jQuery itself, is a concise tool designed to make you a more efficient and effective web developer. In a short 300 pages, this book introduces you to the jQuery programming model and guides you through the major features and techniques you’ll need to be productive immediately. The book anchors each new concept in the tasks you’ll tackle in day-to-day web development and offers unique lab pages where you immediately put your jQuery knowledge to work.

“A nicely written book…beginner-friendly on all levels…concentrates on practice rather than theory and specifications…” – JavaRanch

“A thorough, yet easy, introduction to the subject . . . don’t overlook this title if you are involved in JSP development.” – Java Metroplex Users Group of Dallas, Ft.Worth, Texas

“An excellent introduction . . . Mr. Bayern clearly has the teacher’s gift . . . I’ll look forward to more books from him.” – Since1968.com

JSTL is a Java standard for developing dynamic web sites. It gives non-programmers access to powerful operations through HTML-like tags. This makes JSTL an evolutionary step forward in simplifying the Java web platform.

JSTL in Action introduces and shows off JSTL’s capabilities. It includes lots of useful code snippets so you can start using JSTL quickly. Large, working examples show you how to tie JSTL’s features together. The book shows how to manipulate XML, use relational databases, format text, internationalize web applications, and an advanced part of the book covers configuration and integration of Java code with JSTL.

This book is written both for programmers and page authors. The coverage is comprehensive and still manages to guide the reader through the subject gently and with humor.

BEA’s WebLogic Server implements the full range of J2EE technologies, and includes many additional features such as advanced management, clustering, and web services. Widely adopted, it forms the core of the WebLogic platform, providing a stable framework for building scalable, highly available, and secure applications. In fact, in the long list of WebLogic’s strengths and features, only one shortcoming stands out: the documentation that comes with the WebLogic server often leaves users clamoring for more information.

WebLogic: The Definitive Guide presents a 360-degree view of the world of WebLogic. Providing in-depth coverage of the WebLogic server, the book takes the concept of “definitive” to a whole new level. Exhaustive treatment of the WebLogic server and management console answers any question that developers or administrators might think to ask. Developers will find a useful guide through the world of WebLogic to help them apply their J2EE expertise to build and manage applications. Administrators will discover all they need to manage a WebLogic-based setup. And system architects will appreciate the detailed analysis of the different system architectures supported by WebLogic, the overall organization of a WebLogic domain and supporting network infrastructure, and more.

WebLogic: The Definitive Guide is divided into three sections that explore WebLogic and J2EE, Managing the WebLogic Environment, and WebLogic Enterprise APIs. Some of the topics covered in this comprehensive volume include:

Building web applications on the WebLogic Server

Building and optimizing RMI applications

Using EJBs with WebLogic, including CMP entity beans

Packaging and deploying applications

Understanding WebLogic’s support for clustering

Performance tuning and related configuration settings

Configuring WebLogic’s SSL support

Maximizing WebLogic’s security features

Building web services with XML

Using WebLogic’s JMX services and MBeans

Anyone who has struggled with mastering the WebLogic server will appreciate the thorough, clearly written explanations and examples in this book. WebLogic: The Definitive Guide is the definitive documentation for this popular J2EE application server.
